A Service of Thanksgiving provides parents with an opportunity to thank God for the gift of children, without the need to make the serious promises contained in a Baptism service.
Baptism is a wonderful picture of what God has done in someone's life through Jesus Christ. It symbolizes repentance and faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. Repentance is giving up on faith in anything other than Jesus to put us right with God forever. We all trust in something or someone, even if it’s ourselves. Repentance is a decision to turn away from faith in yourself (your good deeds, your morality, your religion, your career, etc) AND a decision to turn to Jesus and trust in his life, his goodness, his death, his resurrection, and nothing else, for a right standing before God.
For an adult or older child, baptism marks the start of a lifelong journey of trusting in and following Jesus Christ as Lord & Saviour, as a member of a local Christian church. For a very young child, baptism (or 'christening' as it's sometimes called) is a sign that God is calling that child to give their life to Jesus Christ, and that the child's parents are committed to bringing the child up as a member of a local Christian church.
